10/29/07 photo of the day

fall

Winter is definitely on the way. I’m going to Mexico next month to shoot a wedding and hang out. Can’t wait. Who’s been to Mexico City and has some advice for me? Also, I’m in the process of reworking my photo site (claytonhauck.com). Go check it out, put up a new section called snapshots, which is where this shot, and the last entry, came from.

Enjoy,

So I finally got myself a scanner the other day. I’ve been stockpiling all my film for about a year or so with nowhere to put it other than in my drawer for personal viewing. Soon I will have it all up on the web for everyone to see. How exciting! I’d beed shooting a lot of b/w on my Nikon FM-2, but lately I’ve been a bit into the snapshot aesthetic given on the Yashica point-and-shoot series. I own two of them, one T4 I got on eBay for way too much money.. like US$250, and another much older T I got at a thrift shop for $5 which works perfect! I’ve been shooting all colour, mostly Superia at first but now I’ve switched to generic Kodak Gold you buy at any general store, as I think it goes better with the Yashica’s and to be honest, I can’t even tell the difference too much anyway when shooting with them. More to come…as always you can see all my work more frequently at everyoneisfamous.com

We Heart Cock !

hearting of the cock

Some more film for you to see, but first some of the day’s thoughts…

What a day… really. I was awoken to a phonecall from an unknown number at 10am. I did not answer. The voicemessage when something like this though. “Hey you fucker. It’s Mike. I’m back from my honeymoon and I want my goddamned wedding video, bitch!”

Well.. it didn’t really go like that but it very well could have. I shot this fucker – well, we shot this fucker – roughly four months ago. Me and my 2nd camera assistant Megan, that is. It was more more like an epic production than a wedding video. See, the shoot doubled as a reality show for theknot.com. We documented both the bride and the groom from 9 in the morning until the end of the reception. This is around 14 hours of shooting. All in all we shot 12 tapes. Loooong story short, I had all the footage loaded on my old job’s drive. Now I no longer work there so I had to reload it all on my PC at home. Fuck.

Well I FINALLY got it all loaded. From 2pm until 11:30pm.. nothing but loading. And watching movies in the meantime. Finally got around to viewing both Before Sunrise and Before Sunset. Fucking amazing films, really. Just my style of film, too. Makes me regret not having a love fling while in Europe last fall ;)

Alright so now I have not one but two weddings to edit before I hopefully go west on October 3rd. These weddings have to be finished before I leave.

Also trying to figure out where to get prints made now that my lab’s scanner is fucked. Made some calls and found a local Wolf that just bought a new printer, so that will happen Monday. Another thing for the list.

Oh and another thing I accomplished while loading 12 MiniDV tapes to my new 500Gig Lacie drive.. I won an eBay bid on a YashicaT4 35mm point-and-shoot film camera. This is good as it will help me alleviate my currently overflowing refridgerator full of (mostly already expired) film I’ve gotten donated to me from a few people. Apparently people don’t use this stuff anymore…

Okay too much talking already. Here are some much overdue photos. The roll was developed 21 days ago! Jesus time flies.

All photos were shot on the Nikon FM2 with Kodak MAX 400 consumer-grade film. B/Ws converted in PS7 via channel mixxx ! … why convert coulour film to b/w you ask? why the fuck not I say!… so long as you know what you’re doing that is. I think I do.

some superia 400

Here’s my last roll of Superia 400. Had some camera “issues”, this the reason for the two light leaks in the middle of the roll. I opened the back to make sure film was advancing properly… it was. I am a paranoid fuck, I guess. Oh well.

All shots on fuji superia 400 colour shot on nikon fm2/28mm prime. Manipulations listed under photos.

robot
unsharp mask, dodge/burn. red edge is from light leak.

burger baron
b/w conversion via channel mixer in PS7. USM and some dodge/burn as well. worked better in b/w

bar
same as last… more sharpening though as it was soft.. and i was drunk.. and so was he..

fly
dead fly. played with colours some and did much sharpening unfortunately. also dodge/burn

fence

grass!
first and only time at the pool this year. was sunny as I arrived but then got cloudy and rained.. overcast, thus b/w conversion via channel mix in PS7.

ice cream
I RARELY crop much at all of any of my shots.. this one is cropped quite a lot because I only had a 28mm lens on me at the time and I couldn’t really get closer. Also boosted saturation, here. Again, was a shitty afternoon with clouds…

The rest are all the same.. not much manip other than standard USM and dodge/burn…

nothing witty out of me tonight

Ordered a pizza tonight. $17 for a cold pizza that didn’t taste good and took 1.5hrs to get here. So much for “treating myself”

Not much a of a poet tonight, so I will leave things to the images. More words another time.

Here are some scans from the last roll or b/w I shot.

Well, the first one will be digital and then the rest will be film. All photos shot on Nikon FM2, 28mm, Ilford Delta 400, scanned at 800dpi with minimal post process (mainly USM and some dodge/burn)

adaptatiion
So here’s the digital image. Canon 20D/50mm. I’ve always loved plants coming up thru cracks in the cement. Adaptation at it’s finest…

adaptation 2
…and the film version.  Yes, different plants I know, but which do you prefer?

Okay.  Need to work some more on this wedding photo montage.  Then sleep so I can get up early and go rake a beach so it looks nice for the shoot the following day.  I fucking love film production.  Yay!
