Art Brut played a week of sold-out shows here in Chicago (in addition to NY & LA). I caught them on Thursday June 11 and shot a few photos. It’s always hard shooting bands playing in venues with bad lighting/no flashes allowed, not to mention a full house and no photo pit. Alas, I think I got a few decent frames. After the show everyone headed upstairs, where the band played some songs on their iPod–which included songs from The Hold Steady and McLusky. Needless to say, it was rad. Here are my picks of the pics.
Did a little shoot for LA-based hiphop trio PacDiv the other week. I didn’t have nearly as much time as I’d like to figure out some cool shots. These were actually shot right in front of my apartment. Luckily, it was a really nice day. I did a few on one side of the street in the shade and a few on the other side in the harsh sunlight. I used an external flash with a small softbox for fill. Here are a few of my favorites.
Post Honeymoon is a band out of Chicago. There are a few promo shots I did for them, as they have a new CD coming out soon… I wanted to capture something dark and moody. I’ve had this one location in mind for a while and we went there and shot a bit. To be honest, it was pretty damn cold and we did everything on the fly and the results aren’t as good as perhaps they could be. Not to mention the Chicago winter was looking especially crappy this night, plus I just had one non-direct flash and no gels to balance it with the overhead street lights. Excuses aside, I still enjoy the shots but I’m not positive everyone would agree with me on this.
OK so this is a boring post to inform you that I have posted a music portfolio over on my photo site. I’ve already mentioned this on my other site (everyoneisfamous) so sorry if you’ve already checked it out.
I gotta say, as a photographer, doing the boring stuff is pretty vital. Organization is key and it’s something that I have been pretty poor at, esp in the early days. Sorting thru my seemly endless amount of photos to pull these “best of the best” so to speak took way longer than I would’ve liked it to. Anyway, this page will change as I discover other great shots that I want to put up there as well and as I continue shooting. Expect to see overhauls in all of the other website’s sections, as well.
While out in NYC I hung out with my friends Heartsrevolution a few times. One day they were shooting a web video and I took some shots and the other day we did some press shots. Here are a few of them…
I was in a tough spot between enough light to not need a flash and not enough natural light. I wasn’t digging the shadows from the flash so I pumped up the ISO (800 maybe? 1600? Can’t recal) and opened up the aperture as far as it’d go (well, it’s almost always open as far as it’ll go–which is only f4 on my zoom. Really contemplating an upgrade).
Still had some motion blur on a few shots, which I don’t mind as long as it’s not too much. Also, shooting Lo it’s pretty hard to get her to be still
She came up with the great idea to use the string of lights. Looking back I wish we had a bunch more of them. I love getting blurred elements in the foreground.. esp lights!
An impromptu shot on the street I wish I had spent a little more time getting right. I like this frame but Ben looks a little out of it. I think he was actually mid-blink in this shot.
And there they go being chased down the street by evil ninjas…
After last week’s Matt & Kim/Death Set show we headed over to the Wiener’s Circle to help fight off the inevitable Colt45 hangover… here are some photos (aside from the first one which is a cat). I used to live a block away from there so it was kind of fun reminicsing for a minute. Oh and I had to pee so I went and pissed behind the dumpster behind my old apartment. It’s a long story but it felt pretty good.
Inside the Wiener’s Circle. It’s a fairly famous Chicago spot..
This guy requested I take a picture of him and his girlfriend, who seemed pretty annoyed by it. The photo turned out pretty rad, though.
Here’s a video from This American Life about the Wiener Circle.. it’s definitely worth a watch:
I’ve been way too busy the past few weeks… Can’t complain, though. It’s been from having too many gigs, which is not a bad thing for a photographer. Also, my CS photo spread and write-up comes out tomorrow I think… look for it!
Yesterday I hung out with the Cool Kids for a good nine hours. Considering I get tons of traffic to this blog from search engine results for ‘cool kids’, I figured I should follow up a bit.
Their debut EP just came out and they are getting quite a lot of attention these days. We did some candid shots, some press shots and Chuck let me hear some of their new material, and it’s sounding really good! Tomorrow they are playing Dillo Day at Northwestern, which I have been meaning to go to for years.
Here are a few shots (of the over 800 I took during the day).. coming to a magazine write-up near you!
